When we were just starting out, moving to western Nebraska and setting up “shop” in a rented house slightly to the west of the middle of nowhere, we got satellite TV and along with it a DVR. Now for those of you who think technology peaked with a frozen pizza, a DVR is like a VCR in that you can record programming digitally off your TV.
If you have kids, you really need a DVR. You need it for those shows that the kids watch. It is so nice to set it to record every episode of whatever show the kid is addicted to at that moment. That way you can sit and watch EVERY one of those episodes over and over and over and over…
My son’s tastes vary often. For a while, it was Mickey Mouse. Then we went to Tom and Jerry. Thanks Cartoon Network. Thanks. America’s Funniest Animals has been watched more than I care to admit. And lately we’re into How It’s Made and Thundar the Barbarian of all things. It is kinda cool that my son likes to watch the same cartoons I did when I was a kid.
The problem with the DVR is fast forward. You can skip the commercials, which with an attention span measured in nanoseconds that a three-year old has, that is a handy thing. He can even work the remote enough to do it himself. The problem comes when we’re watching live TV. We took him to the theater to see his first movie a while back. The opening credits and previews made him furious because we couldn’t fast forward to the movie.
The DVR is also handy for watching TV that I want to watch too. I record it and watch it later after he’s gone to bed. Works well for hunting shows because no one here lets me watch them when they’re actually on.
It is also handy for predicting my wife’s moods. When she is thinking she needs to lose weight, she records health shows. When she wants new cloths, fashion types shows get the nod. When she wants to redecorate or remodel the house, you guessed it.
Whenever I see that she has set it to record baby shows, well, I just delete those shows from recording. I got enough on my plate for right now.
It is like you are living in our house Derrek. We are currently on our 5th hour of “Go Diego Go” and “Little Bill.” I enjoy your stories, I can totally relate. Thank you
